Petra Stefankova

"Yet Another Face"

August 2 - 16, 2016

LiTE-HAUS Galerie + Projektraum welcomes Slovakian artist Petra Štefanková for her solo exhibition “Yet Another Face”. This series is about the artist’s personal reflection, emotion, and incorporates the surrealist automatic drawing method. The images were presented worldwide across various platforms - magazines, books, conferences and talks. This Series was her first 3D illustration project created in collaboration with Roman Vrbovsky. It originally won the Channel 4's 4Talent Award in the United Kingdom in 2007.

Štefanková's digital artworks are based on the early 20th century surrealist automatic drawing method, and she has adapted these principles to contemporary digital art practice using 3D applications. The surrealist technique refers to the psychoanalysis research of Sigmund Freud, the manifesto by Andre Breton, and drawings of Max Ernst. The composition and content of the artwork were strictly led by internal subconscious reactions. The process is a reflection of the artist's personal experience and the artist becomes a medium translating her subconscious internal reactions into a visual form playing with random elements based on the uncontrolled process executed in different - often strongly emotional - life situations and fragile moments. Štefanková's approach depends on the unique human perception and interpretations of her internal and external world.

Štefanková was born in Bratislava. She studied graphic design at J. Vydra School of Applied Arts and the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, and continued her education in Prague and  London. She works in graphic design for print, web, multimedia and film and TV graphics. In the field of illustration she works in advertising, editorial and book illustration. Her work has been exhibited globally in the USA, Great Britain, Australia, Hong Kong, Poland, Germany, Japan, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
